Getting Started

I'm new to yoga. Can I practice Ashtanga?

Absolutely! Ashtanga is actually ideal for beginners because you learn at your own pace in Mysore-style classes. You'll receive one-on-one attention from the teacher who will guide you through the poses step by step. Many of our long-term students started with zero yoga experience.

What should I bring to my first class?

Just yourself! We have yoga mats, towels, and all props available for use. Wear comfortable clothing you can move in (avoid very loose or baggy clothes that might get in the way). Bring water if you'd like, though we recommend drinking before and after practice rather than during.

What time should I arrive for my first class?

Please arrive 10-15 minutes early for your first visit. This gives us time to show you around the studio, discuss any injuries or concerns, and help you get settled. The studio opens at 6:00 AM for morning Mysore practice.

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes, we ask that you book your spot through our website. This helps us manage class sizes and ensures everyone receives personalized attention. You can book classes from the schedule on our homepage.

About Mysore Practice

What is Mysore-style yoga?

Mysore is the traditional way Ashtanga yoga is taught, named after the city in India where it originated. Unlike led classes, in Mysore you practice at your own pace while a teacher moves around the room giving individual adjustments and instruction. You memorize the sequence over time—the teacher gives you new poses as you're ready for them. It's like a private lesson within a group setting.

How is Mysore different from a regular yoga class?

In most yoga classes, an instructor calls out poses and everyone does them together. In Mysore, you practice the sequence you've learned independently while teachers circulate to help you. You arrive within an open time window (rather than a specific start time), practice your full sequence, and leave when you're done. This self-paced format means you get exactly the practice you need each day.

What if I don't know the sequence?

That's completely fine—everyone starts somewhere! On your first day, we'll teach you the opening sequence and a few poses. Each time you come, you'll practice what you know and gradually learn more. Most students can practice the first 20-30 minutes of the sequence independently within a few weeks. The repetition helps the body and mind memorize it naturally.

How long is a Mysore practice?

It varies by student! Beginners might practice for 30-45 minutes while experienced practitioners may practice for 90 minutes to 2 hours. There's no pressure to stay for a specific amount of time—you practice what you've been given and leave when you're finished.

Practice Guidelines

Why don't you practice on moon days?

In the Ashtanga tradition, we take rest on full and new moon days. The moon's gravitational pull is thought to affect the body (just as it affects ocean tides). New moons are associated with lower energy, while full moons can bring heightened energy—neither ideal for a strong physical practice. It's also a nice rhythm that guarantees two rest days each month. Check our Moon Days page for the current calendar.

How often should I practice?

Traditionally, Ashtanga is practiced six days a week, resting on Saturdays and moon days. However, we understand that's not realistic for everyone starting out. We recommend coming at least 3 times per week to build familiarity with the sequence. Consistency matters more than intensity—three times a week for months beats daily practice for just a few weeks.

What are "Ladies' Holiday"?

Women are traditionally advised to rest during the first 2-3 days of menstruation. This isn't required, but many women find it helpful to honor their body's need for rest during this time. Listen to your body and do what feels right for you.

Can I practice if I have injuries?

Yes, with modifications! Please let your teacher know about any injuries before class. Ashtanga can actually be therapeutic when practiced mindfully, and we can modify poses to work around injuries. Some conditions may require a gentler approach initially.

Class Types

What's the difference between Mysore and Led Primary?

In Mysore class, you practice independently at your own pace while receiving individual instruction. In Led Primary, the teacher calls out the poses in Sanskrit with traditional vinyasa counting, and everyone practices together. Led class is great for learning the correct vinyasa count and breathing rhythm. We recommend establishing a Mysore practice first, then joining Led classes to refine your understanding.

What is the Primary Series?

The Primary Series (Yoga Chikitsa, meaning 'yoga therapy') is the first of six sequences in the Ashtanga system. It includes sun salutations, standing poses, seated poses, backbends, and finishing poses. Most practitioners spend years working within the Primary Series—it contains everything needed for a complete practice. Additional series are given only when you've mastered what comes before.

What are the pranayama classes?

Pranayama means 'breath control' or 'extension of life force.' Our pranayama sessions focus on traditional breathing techniques that calm the nervous system, increase energy, and prepare the mind for meditation. These practices are traditionally done after asana (physical) practice. Pranayama is accessible to everyone regardless of physical ability.
