Ashtanga Classes

Traditional Ashtanga yoga instruction in Denver's RiNo Arts District.

Mysore Style

Mysore style classes are open to all levels. Students practice independently at their own pace. The teacher helps each individual, giving verbal guidance to those just learning the practice and mostly hands-on adjustments to those with an established practice. The sequence is learned progressively over a period of time appropriate to each individual.

Beginners should commit to multiple classes or a monthly pass to initiate the practice with some momentum and ensure the development of a solid foundation. We encourage beginners to take the Intro to Ashtanga class on Saturday to get a basic feel for the postures and the foundation of the practice.

Beginners can expect to spend between 30 to 45 minutes in the studio at first, with that time gradually increasing as more of the sequence is learned. The practice is designed to last and blossom over an entire lifetime.

The start time for Mysore classes is open; as long as you finish your practice by the end time, you may arrive at any time.

Led Full Primary

In the Led Full Primary classes, students with some Ashtanga or other vinyasa style experience are verbally guided through the full traditional sequence of postures known as the Primary Series. The class moves at a steady pace. Students develop steadiness of breath, mental focus, and core awareness during the uninterrupted flow of the postures. This class is not appropriate for beginners.

Pranayama

Pranayama is the practice of using the breath to gain entry into the very essence of both the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems. We practice a slightly shorter version of the Pranayama sequence that was passed down by Pattabhi Jois to Tim Miller.

Pranayama teaches us the very essence of breath and breathing which is the foundation of the Ashtanga practice as well as primary nourishment for our daily life and embodied being. Students should always pay close attention to and stay within their limits. All are welcome to try a touch of this practice although it is recommended to have a very grounded long term daily Ashtanga asana practice.

Active Series

Sharath Jois created the Active Series based on his many years of practicing and teaching yoga, and wanted to create something that is accessible to all. This 55 minute series, which is developed from traditional Ashtanga Yoga, helps people be active and is also useful for athletes in other sports who would benefit from yoga as a supplement to their training.

This series is a perfect complement to all sports because it will not reduce muscle mass, but it will help develop flexibility. It is designed to help everyone have a clear and calm mind. It is for people of any age.

The Active Series is not about attaining perfection; instead, it is about moving the body, breathing, and staying active and vibrant. It is a beautiful system where stillness and ease arise naturally.

Intro/Fundamentals

All levels are welcome to the Intro/Fundamentals class of Ashtanga Yoga. This class covers basic principles of the Ashtanga methodology, both physical and philosophical. Approximately 1/3 of the Primary Series of asanas is covered in this class, with detailed posture instruction and hands-on adjustments. It's a great setting to ask questions about Ashtanga, too.
