Moon Days 2027

← View 2026

In the Ashtanga tradition, we rest from asana practice on full and new moon days.

Why We Observe Moon Days

The moon's gravitational pull affects Earth's tides, and because humans are largely composed of water (around 70%), it is believed that these forces also impact our bodies. This gravitational influence is stronger during both full and new moon phases.

Full Moon

Full Moon

Corresponds to the end of inhalation, when prana—an expansive, upward-moving force—is strongest. This can make us feel more energetic but also potentially ungrounded, increasing the risk of injury.

New Moon

New Moon

Corresponds to the end of exhalation, when apana—a contracting, downward-moving force—is strongest. This can lead to feelings of being grounded and calm, but also lethargic and dense.

Observing moon days is a way to honor the teachings and lineage, tune into natural rhythms, and give the body essential time to recover and rejuvenate.
